Kara Evans | Trainee Journalist

I am currently a trainee journalist, studying for the NCTJ Diploma in Multimedia Journalism at News Associates, driven by the belief that news should be accessible and comprehensible for all. With a background in Politics and International Studies, my passion lies in British politics and social justice issues, with a specific focus on the lived experiences of working-class people across the UK.

My Experience🌟

With hands-on experience across print, digital, and social media journalism, my background spans newsroom placements at The Times and Financial Times, complemented by an extensive portfolio of work across independent and student-led publications. As Culture Section Lead at The Times Summer Academy, I led a team producing a Gen Z–focused magazine and gained first-hand insight into the fast-paced dynamics of newsroom reporting and broadcasting. At the Financial Times, I conducted interviews with senior journalists and early-career specialists to explore the publication’s evolving business model, co-developing Budget Buddy, a student finance initiative that deepened my understanding of the financial and sustainability challenges shaping modern media.

My time in student journalism has been equally formative. As Deputy News Editor for The Boar, Warwick’s award-winning student newspaper, I refined my editorial, commissioning, and SEO skills while managing content across print and digital platforms. Beyond campus, I’ve continued to champion accessible and thought-provoking journalism through roles at The New Feminist Magazine and Europinion, where I write and edit stories amplifying youth and intersectional voices for audiences of over 20,000 readers. Most recently, as a Journalism Research Assistant for Sophia Smith Galer, I investigated how British journalists are expanding their digital reach, using AI-driven analysis to uncover trends in online engagement and audience strategy, which reinforced my commitment to understanding and innovating within an ever-evolving media landscape.
